미국 조지아텍 컴퓨터과학 온라인 석사 OMSCS 지원_추천서 관련 FAQ

처음 학점은행을 시작하게 된 계기는 조지아텍 온라인 석사를 해보고 싶었기 때문이었다.

코로나 기간을 유익하게 활용하고 싶었는데, 조지아텍 OMSCS는 총 학비가 700만 원 정도로 굉장히 저렴한 데다가 온라인이라도 CS 석사 하나 있다면 나중에 뭘 하더라도 도움이 될 것 같았기 때문이다.

 

얼마 안 가 곧 온라인 석사가 아닌 스위스 석사로 방향 전환하긴 했지만..

명절 연휴를 맞이하여 컴퓨터를 정리하다가 예전에 조사해뒀던 조지아텍 OMSCS에 대한 폴더를 발견했다.

그냥 삭제하긴 아까워 아무에게라도 도움이 되길 바라며 여기에 적어본다.

내가 언급하려는 건 추천서에 관한 것이다.

조지아텍 OMSCS에 지원하려면 추천서 3개가 필요하다. 추천인의 이메일을 적으면 그 사람에게 추천서 폼이 있는 링크가 발송된다.

 

Q. 추천서 양식은 어떤 형태인가?

A. 추천서는 아래와 같은 객관식 형태이다. 사실상 설문지에 가깝다.

• Exceptional (Top 1%)
• Outstanding (Top 5%)
• Excellent (Top 10%)
• Very Good (Top 25%)
• Satisfactory (Top 50%)
• Below Average (Below 50%)
• No Basis for Judgment

The more specifically they can describe what you did/do in your job in the context of knowing CS fundamentals, the better. For example:
• what data structures do you use
• what types algorithms do you use
• how proficient are you with OOP/databases/computer architecture/etc.
• what machine learning or AI techniques have you used
And giving specific examples is always best.

 

 

Q. 추천서는 꼭 대학 교수에게 받아야 하나?

A. 아니다. 꼭 대학 관련 추천서일 필요는 없다. 직장 상사, 동료 등 Work reference 3개를 넣어서 붙은 사람도 있다.

Q. 추천서가 많이 중요한가?

A. 별로 그렇진 않아 보인다.

 

The contents of recommendation letters do almost nothing unless they write something negative.
You don't need to have strong letters. Having someone vouch for you is good enough.

If the rest of your background is good, I don't think strong recommendation letters are needed for this program. The main thing is if you have CS coursework.

No strong recommendation letters
